Mission Beyond the Congregation

At Westminster, we believe that the church is humanity's response to Jesus' mission.  At the very beginning of his public ministry Jesus described his mission by quoting the prophet Isaiah:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Luke 3: 18-19

At Westminster, we participate in what God is doing in the world both within our congregation and in our community.

Westminster contributes to local missions through monetary donations and through volunteer work by our members.  These missions include the Caring Place meals at the First Evangelical Lutheran church, the FISH Food Pantry, the homeless shelter at Christ Episcopal Church, the Interfaith Hospitality Network, the Women's Recovery Center, and The Living Well clinic.

As a church, we attempt to give at least a tenth of what we receive each year to mission beyond the congregation.  In addition to budgeted funds, the church collects any undesignated Sunday offerings for use as the discretionary fund. The mission committee designates a local mission to receive these funds each month.

Our church has a special relationship with nearby Tecumseh Elementary School, in which members of the church volunteer as tutors for reading, spelling, and math; gift baskets are prepared for local Tecumseh families at Thanksgiving and Christmas; and church members provide cookies and other support for school assemblies.  Westminster's Ruth Circle directs this partnership and works hard to provide support throughout the year.

The Pass It On ministry at Westminster is known and appreciated throughout the community.  Pass It On matches people who have needs with people who have the resources to meet those needs; for example, someone moving to a smaller home may have extra furniture that can help a family just starting out on their own.  Pass It On also raises funds to purchase inflatable beds and bedding for Greene County residents who have no beds.  This spring, children who received mattresses also received colorful hand-made pillowcases.  To contact Pass It On with a donation or request, please call (937)971-1676.

Westminster members enjoy serving and getting to know people in our community.  A highlight of our mission efforts each year is our Valentine's Day visit to the Elmcroft Assisted Living Center:  members bring cookies, sing songs, and visit with the residents before sharing hand-written Valentine's greetings.
